Alternative rock n roll idol and punk poet John Cooper Clarke returns to the Arches this October.

Combining wordplay and punnery, with the delivery of an American beat poet, he recalls hilarious anecdotes of life in a Northern Town, reciting his most famous poems in trademark machine-gun style. Highly regarded by bands past and present, he famously recited Evidently Chickentown at the start and end of Joy Division’s Transmission video and has opened for The Fall, Sex Pistols, Joy Division, Buzzcocks, Elvis Costello, New Order, Be-Bop Deluxe and Rockpile.

Referred to as the Bard of Salford, he scored a UK top 40 hit in 1979 with the single Gimmix. Play Loud, achieving further chart success with the album Snap, Crackle and Bop. In print, his most popular work is the collection Ten Years in an Open Necked Shirt, and he appeared as himself in Control, Anton Corbijn’s biopic on Joy Division, despite having aged 30 years since his 1977 performance with the legendary band. Cast aside your traditional notions of poetry and listen up to the self proclaimed ‘Johnny Clarke, the man behind the hairstyle’.
