Unkle Bob Biog Dec 2012 In amongst the manufactured pop drivel, the excitable indier-than-thou new Smiths-elects and the R & B soundalikes you too may have had the good fortune to have stumbled upon something quite special. Enter Unkle Bob... Surely formed by the thought that “they just don’t write them like that anymore do they?” Unkle Bob are a band you will want to listen to again and again – just to make sure they are as good as you think they are. Unkle Bob are set to release Letters EP in January 2013. The release marks the return of front man and singer-songwriter Rick Webster following the bands formal split in 2011. After penning several songs in 2012 Rick decided to return to the studio suggesting that there was “unfinished business”. The four track EP is self-produced and hints at a more orchestral sound with trumpets, cellos, and ebows throughout. It is available now for pre-order via Pledge Music, formats include CD Digipack, 7″ Vinyl, and high quality download. Genuinely loved (and a well-kept secret like Teenage Fanclub and early REM) Unkle Bob are naturally one of the most gorgeous and uplifting bands on the planet. Q magazine suggested that debut album Sugar and Spite was “reminiscent of early REM – really very lovely indeed” whilst MOJO noted that it was “warm-melancholic as Prefab Sprout or icy-isolated as Radiohead” and that the band hurled themselves “from reflection to ripped-up despair in a moment.” The Times allowed that we shouldn’t “be surprised if this Glasgow-born quintet are still selling albums 20 years from now because they have a deadly weapon in their armoury; great songs.” More praise for Unkle Bob: “Rick Webster is a master of the lovelorn, desperate lyric.” The Times. “A folk group for the Coldplay Generation.” WORD “FAB. Just imagine fellow Scots Teenage Fanclub doing full-tilt hypnotic Neil Young-style razor rock.” The Mirror.
